Another Candle, Another Year...Wiser?

Writer: Brittany PBrittany P

Remember when we were kids? Birthdays were all about the presents. The bigger the pile, the better. I can still feel that excitement, tearing through wrapping paper, hoping for the latest toy or, as I got older, CD.

But something funny happens as you get older. Suddenly, it's not about the stuff anymore. You realize that the greatest gift of all is time - time with the people you love. These days, I find myself valuing experiences over items. A shared meal, a good laugh, a heartfelt conversation - these are the gifts that really matter.

Want to know a secret? I have old voicemails saved on my phone. They're from my grandparents, just simple "happy birthday" messages from before they passed. Every year on my birthday, I listen to them. It's like a little time machine. It is such a blessing to live in a time where technology can keep those memories alive.

Living with a progressive disease...it changes things. Birthdays take on a whole new meaning when you're acutely aware of the passage of time. Each year feels more precious, more worthy of celebration. I find myself wanting to soak in every moment with my loved ones, to really be present. It's like I've developed this intense desire to experience everything life has to offer.

Because here's the thing - we don't know what the future holds. None of us do, multiple sclerosis or not. So why not make today count? Why not celebrate the heck out of another trip around the sun?

So here's to another year. Another candle on the cake, another laugh with friends, another chance to make memories. Here's to the messages of love, the shared moments, and yes, even the challenges that have made us who we are.

Happy birthday to me. And to anyone else out there celebrating - may your day be filled with love, laughter, and the knowledge that you are cherished, just as you are.
